The command to "rule over" and "subdue" does not give people permission to damage a world God calls good. The chapter comes from an ancient setting and addresses the questions of its first readers, long before modern scientific debates. ### Does Genesis 1 mean the earth was made in six 24-hour days? Some Christians understand each day as 24 hours. Others see a literary framework or a longer period, noting that the sun appears on day four and that the days form two carefully matched groups of three. People committed to the authority of the Bible hold each of these views, so the question should not be used as a simple test of faith. ### What does it mean to be made in the image of God? Human beings are made to represent God in the world and to reflect him in capacities such as thought, choice, creativity, and relationship. Genesis gives this identity equally to male and female. A person's worth therefore does not depend on ability, productivity, or social standing. ### Why does God say "let us make man in our image"? Three explanations are common.
