# Bible Verses About Fear

> "Do not be afraid" is among the most repeated instructions in Scripture, and it usually comes to people facing real danger or uncertainty. Exiles, soldiers, shepherds, and a young woman told she would bear a son all hear these words. The reassurance is usually that God is present with them. The Bible also commends the "fear of the Lord," using the word for a reverent awe that puts other fears into perspective.

## God's presence is the main reassurance

When Scripture addresses fear directly, it usually reminds people that God is with them. The threats they face are still real.

- [Isaiah 41:10](https://biblehearth.online/verse/isaiah/41/10) — God speaks to people already in exile and promises strength and help within their difficult situation.
- [Deuteronomy 31:6](https://biblehearth.online/verse/deuteronomy/31/6) — Before Israel enters an occupied land, Moses grounds courage in God's continuing presence with the people.
- [Psalm 23:4](https://biblehearth.online/verse/psalms/23/4) — The psalm travels through the darkest valley and finds comfort there in the shepherd's company.

## Love and trust make less room for fear

Scripture rarely treats courage as a feat of willpower. Love, trust, and reverence for God give people a larger reality to hold alongside fear.

- [1 John 4:18](https://biblehearth.online/verse/1-john/4/18) — John says mature love drives out the fear of punishment. Security in love changes what a person expects from God.
- [Psalm 56:3](https://biblehearth.online/verse/psalms/56/3) — David writes this while in enemy hands; the admission of fear and the choice to trust share the same sentence. Courage can begin while fear is still present.
- [Proverbs 29:25](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/29/25) — This proverb names the social pressure created by other people's opinions and directs attention toward trust in God.

## The one fear Scripture commends

The same texts that say "do not fear" repeatedly commend the fear of the Lord. Here the word conveys awe and well-placed reverence. Taking God seriously can reduce the power of lesser fears.

- [Proverbs 9:10](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/9/10) — Proverbs presents reverence for God as wisdom's starting place, a posture from which learning can begin.
- [Matthew 10:28](https://biblehearth.online/verse/matthew/10/28) — Jesus explicitly ranks fears for disciples facing persecution, telling them which one is worth keeping.

## What these verses do not mean

"Fear not" can become a slogan used to shame people for a normal nervous system response. The people who first heard these words were often afraid, and Scripture meets them in that condition. These verses also don't guarantee physical safety. Many people who received the command later suffered real harm. The repeated promise is God's company through danger. Reading the words as a protective charm asks them to promise something they don't say.

The instruction not to be afraid often arrives at a frightening moment: before
a battle, during exile, or when an angel appears. The timing acknowledges the
danger and gives the hearer a reason to move through it.

Together, these passages show courage growing from God's presence, mature love,
trust, and a clearer sense of proportion. Fear may still be felt, but it no
longer has to make every decision.

## Common questions about fear

### How many times does the Bible say "do not be afraid"?

Counts vary by translation and by whether related phrasings are included, so the popular claim of exactly 365 is folklore, not a reliable count. Commands about fear appear well over a hundred times across both Testaments. The exact number depends on which wording and translation a person counts.

### What does "fear of the Lord" mean?

It describes reverence and awe: taking God seriously enough for that reality to reorder other priorities. Proverbs calls it the beginning of wisdom. Because the same books repeatedly tell people not to be afraid, reverence for God and terror are clearly different postures.
