# Bible Verses About Friendship

> Proverbs presents friendship as a relationship that shapes character. The people someone walks with influence who that person becomes, and an honest friend can be more valuable than an agreeable companion. In John 15, Jesus calls his followers friends and connects that name with openness and self-giving love.

## The test is loyalty over time, especially in trouble

Proverbs repeatedly distinguishes friendship from company by what happens when circumstances turn.

- [Proverbs 17:17](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/17/17) — Adversity reveals the loyalty this proverb describes. A true friend remains present when easier companions leave.
- [Proverbs 18:24](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/18/24) — Sets many companions against one who sticks closer than a brother, showing that the number of relationships says little about their depth.
- [1 Samuel 18:1](https://biblehearth.online/verse/1-samuel/18/1) — The friendship between Jonathan and David is described in covenant language. Jonathan's loyalty later comes at the cost of his own claim to the throne.

## Honest friends are ranked above agreeable ones

Several proverbs value a friend's difficult truth above an enemy's pleasant flattery. Honesty is joined to proven care.

- [Proverbs 27:6](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/27/6) — Wounds from a friend are called faithful and set against the profuse kisses of an enemy. The contrast concerns sincerity, not permission to be severe.
- [Proverbs 27:17](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/27/17) — Iron sharpening iron is friction that improves an edge; the image assumes that both people benefit from the relationship.

## Your friends shape you, so choose deliberately

Proverbs describes companionship as one of the forces that forms a person's character. Choosing friends is also choosing influence.

- [Proverbs 13:20](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/13/20) — Stated as cause and effect in both directions, with the harm to the companion of fools spelled out.
- [Ecclesiastes 4:9-10](https://biblehearth.online/verse/ecclesiastes/4/9) — Ecclesiastes makes a practical case for companionship: when one person falls, another can help that person stand again.

## Jesus redefines the word by what it costs

Jesus deliberately changes the relationship he names, moving from servants to friends. He connects friendship with disclosure and costly love.

- [John 15:15](https://biblehearth.online/verse/john/15/15) — Jesus explains the change through disclosure. He has made known to his friends what he heard from the Father.
- [John 15:13](https://biblehearth.online/verse/john/15/13) — Spoken two verses earlier and hours before he demonstrates it, which places the definition only hours before Jesus gives his life.

## What these verses do not mean

"Iron sharpens iron" is the most abused verse here, regularly used to excuse people who are simply harsh. The image is mutual: both blades improve. It sits beside a proverb that calls a friend's wounds faithful precisely because they come from someone committed to the relationship. Criticism from someone who hasn't earned trust shouldn't be mislabeled as sharpening. Proverbs 18:24 is also often read as a direct reference to Jesus. In context, it contrasts shallow acquaintance with deep loyalty, and importing a New Testament figure obscures the proverb's own subject. Finally, "bad company corrupts good character" has been used to justify cutting off anyone struggling, which sits badly with a Jesus criticized specifically for the company he kept.

Proverbs looks at friendship through everyday tests. Who stays when life goes
badly? Who tells the truth with care? What kind of person is someone becoming
through years of shared influence?

John 15 adds another dimension. Jesus calls his disciples friends because he
has shared the Father's purposes with them. Within hours, he also shows the
self-giving love that defines the relationship.

## Common questions about friendship

### What does "iron sharpens iron" mean in the Bible?

Proverbs 27:17 pictures friction that improves an edge, and the image is mutual; both pieces of iron are changed. It commends friendships in which people make each other better through honest engagement. It is not a license for harshness. The neighboring proverb calls a friend's wounds faithful because they come from someone committed to the relationship.

### What did Jesus say about friendship?

In John 15:15 he tells his disciples he no longer calls them servants but friends, giving disclosure as the reason. A servant does not know the master's business. Two verses earlier he defines the greatest love as laying down one's life for one's friends, which he does within a day.
