# Bible Verses About Parenting

> The Bible's instructions to parents are mostly about restraint. Ephesians and Colossians warn fathers against provoking or embittering their children. Deuteronomy places formation within ordinary daily conversation. Proverbs 22:6, the best-known parenting verse, offers a wisdom pattern about early formation, not a guarantee about every child's future.

## Formation happens through ordinary routines

Israel's foundational instruction names familiar moments throughout a day. Repeated conversation gives beliefs and values time to take root.

- [Deuteronomy 6:6-7](https://biblehearth.online/verse/deuteronomy/6/6) — Sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up make up the list. The words must first be on the parent's own heart.
- [Proverbs 22:6](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/22/6) — A proverb about the durability of early formation; proverbs state reliable patterns without guaranteeing every individual outcome.

## The warnings are aimed at parents, not children

Both New Testament passages addressed directly to fathers begin with restraint. They focus attention on how parental power affects a child.

- [Ephesians 6:4](https://biblehearth.online/verse/ephesians/6/4) — Fathers are warned against exasperating their children before being told how to teach them. The instruction addresses the person with greater power.
- [Colossians 3:21](https://biblehearth.online/verse/colossians/3/21) — Paul names the harm he wants to prevent: children becoming discouraged. Their inner lives matter to the instruction.
- [Proverbs 29:17](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/29/17) — This proverb connects correction with a child's growth and the peace of the household.

## Children are received as gifts

Psalms uses the language of heritage and reward. Children are entrusted to parents; they aren't achievements or possessions.

- [Psalm 127:3-5](https://biblehearth.online/verse/psalms/127/3) — Heritage and reward, with the surrounding psalm insisting that anxious overwork can't build a household on its own.
- [Mark 10:14](https://biblehearth.online/verse/mark/10/14) — Jesus is indignant at disciples turning children away, and makes them the picture of how the kingdom is received.

## What these verses do not mean

Proverbs 22:6 is routinely read as a guarantee that good parenting produces faithful adults, which leaves parents of struggling children carrying a verdict Scripture never issued. Proverbs states general patterns; the same book says diligence brings wealth, and Job exists. Read it as wisdom about the lasting influence of early formation. The more serious misuse is "spare the rod": Proverbs 13:24 has been used to justify harming children, and that reading conflicts with Ephesians 6:4 and Colossians 3:21, where the explicit concerns are exasperation and discouragement. Any reading of a proverb that produces a frightened child contradicts the New Testament instructions aimed squarely at parents.

The New Testament's direct instructions to fathers are brief and pointed. Both
warn parents to avoid patterns that exasperate, embitter, or discourage their
children.

Deuteronomy supplies a positive picture through ordinary routines. Parents talk
about faith while sitting at home, walking, going to bed, and getting up.
Formation grows through repeated attention in everyday hours.

## Common questions about parenting

### What does "train up a child in the way he should go" mean?

Proverbs 22:6 states a general pattern about the lasting effect of early formation within a collection of wisdom sayings. The same book says diligence produces wealth, another pattern that doesn't describe every case. Reading the verse as a guarantee wrongly makes every wandering adult child proof of parental failure.

### What does the Bible tell parents not to do?

Both New Testament instructions to fathers are prohibitions. Ephesians 6:4 warns against exasperating children, and Colossians 3:21 warns against embittering them because they may become discouraged. Both passages call the parent, as the person with greater power, to restraint.
