# Bible Verses About Work

> Work appears in Genesis before the fall, when the first human receives the task of tending the garden. Work itself isn't the punishment; Genesis 3 describes the new frustration and toil attached to it. Scripture calls people to diligent labor and gives an equally serious command to stop and rest on the Sabbath.

## Work is presented as good before it becomes hard

The order in Genesis matters. Labor is assigned in the garden, and only later does the ground resist.

- [Genesis 2:15](https://biblehearth.online/verse/genesis/2/15) — The assignment to work and keep the garden comes before the fall, making labor part of the original arrangement.
- [Ecclesiastes 3:13](https://biblehearth.online/verse/ecclesiastes/3/13) — Ecclesiastes, which is bleak about most things, calls satisfaction in one's work a gift.
- [Proverbs 14:23](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/14/23) — A blunt contrast between labor and talk, characteristic of Proverbs' practical approach to daily life.

## Rest is commanded with the same weight as work

The fourth commandment devotes more words to stopping than to working, and extends rest to workers, resident foreigners, and animals.

- [Exodus 20:9-10](https://biblehearth.online/verse/exodus/20/9) — The command covers the whole household including servants and livestock. Rest is therefore a matter of justice for people with less power, not only a personal preference.
- [Mark 2:27](https://biblehearth.online/verse/mark/2/27) — Defending disciples accused of breaking Sabbath rules, Jesus says the Sabbath was made to serve human good.
- [Psalm 127:2](https://biblehearth.online/verse/psalms/127/2) — A direct challenge to anxious overwork, contrasting early rising and late nights with rest given to those God loves.

## Scripture pays attention to how people work

New Testament instructions focus on a worker's integrity, effort, and ultimate accountability across many kinds of occupation.

- [Colossians 3:23](https://biblehearth.online/verse/colossians/3/23) — Written first to slaves in a Roman household, which is worth knowing before it is applied to a salaried job.
- [Proverbs 16:3](https://biblehearth.online/verse/proverbs/16/3) — Commitment of the work precedes the establishing of plans, reversing the usual order.
- [2 Thessalonians 3:10](https://biblehearth.online/verse/2-thessalonians/3/10) — Paul's rule addresses those unwilling to work, in a community where some had stopped in expectation of Christ's return.

## What these verses do not mean

Colossians 3:23, "work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord," is regularly used by employers to extract more from people, and by individuals to justify overwork. It was written to enslaved people in a Roman household as a way of preserving dignity in labor they didn't choose. It isn't an employer's productivity mandate, and the Sabbath command rules out unlimited effort. Second Thessalonians 3:10 is another common weapon. Paul writes about those *unwilling* to work in a specific community that had downed tools awaiting the second coming, and applying it to people who cannot work, or cannot find work, inverts a body of Scripture that is fiercely protective of the poor.

The sequence in Genesis is easy to miss and changes the whole topic. Work is
assigned in chapter two, in the garden, before anything has gone wrong. The
curse in chapter three doesn't create work; it makes the ground fight back.

The command to labor for six days also includes a command to stop on the
seventh. That rest extends to everyone in the household, including workers and
resident foreigners who may have little say in the schedule.

## Common questions about work

### Is work a punishment for sin in the Bible?

No. Genesis 2:15 places the first human in the garden to work and keep it before the fall, so labor is part of the original arrangement. What changes in Genesis 3 is difficulty. The ground resists, and work becomes toilsome. The activity is not the curse; the frustration attached to it is.

### What does the Bible say about rest and burnout?

The fourth commandment devotes more words to stopping than to working and extends rest to workers, resident foreigners, and animals. Rest is a matter of justice as well as personal renewal. Psalm 127:2 challenges anxious overwork, and Jesus says in Mark 2:27 that the sabbath was made for people and intended for their good.
